Explain: A Tool for Performing Abductive Inference
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes a tool called Explain for performing abductive inference. Logical abduction is the problem of finding a simple explanatory hypothesis that explains observed facts. Specifically, given a set of premises Γ and a desired conclusion φ, abductive inference finds a simple explanation ψ such that Γ ∧ ψ |= φ, and ψ is consistent with known premises Γ . Abduction has many useful applications in verification, including inference of missing preconditions, error diagnosis, and construction of compositional proofs. This paper gives a brief tutorial introduction to Explain and describes the basic inference algorithm.

Abductive Inference with Probabilistic Graphical Models
Starting from a general characterization of logical inferences, I consider abductive reasoning, which aims at finding likely causes for observed symptoms. Such inferences are not truth preserving and thus it is necessary to assess their conclusions, to compare different explanations of the same findings, and finally to select the “best” hypothesis. Since in a large number of applications probab...
متن کاملA Neural Network Approach for First-Order Abductive Inference
This paper presents a neural network approach for first-order abductive inference by generalising an existing method from propositional logic to the first-order case. We show how the original propositional method can be extended to enable the grounding of a first-order abductive problem; and we also show how it can be modified to allow the prioritised computation of minimal solutions. We illust...

What distinguishes abductive inference from other modes of inference? What distinguishes the different forms of abductive inference? These are perhaps the key questions that face the student of abduction, and the core of Lorenzo Magnani’s book is devoted to them. The book contains, among other things, a defence of several putative distinctions, and it touches on an impressively wide range of pe...

متن کاملThe computational costs of recipient design and intention recognition in communication
Understanding the communicative intentions of others based on their behavior can be seen as an ‘inference to the best explanation’, a.k.a. abduction. As abduction is often an intractable task, it has been suggested that communicators alleviate the work of an addressee by performing recipient design, adapting their behavior to the presumed beliefs and knowledge of the addressee. In this paper we...
